Last year, the foodservice business in the US, like the rest of the world, was severely disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, data from research firm NPD revealed that foodservice operators and manufacturers with agile and innovative tactics in 2020 are now taking steps toward recovery. And the keys to success are the three Ds: Drive-thru, Delivery and Digital.
Findings showed that 27% of customer traffic happens at the drive-thru. Drive-thru traffic grew +19% in 2020 vs 2019. Meanwhile, digital played a big role last year as 15% of total transactions in 2020 were initiated via an ordering app compared to 6% in 2019. On the other hand, delivery accounted for 6% of all orders in 2020 ― a 95% increase over 2019.
But while the three Ds were helping the US foodservice industry cope with the pandemic lockdowns last year, another bright spot for the F&B business emerged: Takeaways or Carry-outs. Carry-out grew five points in 2020 compared to 2019 and now accounts for half of all foodservice visits. NPD said this trend accounted for 38% of full-service traffic in 2020, up from 17% in 2019.
