Afternoon teas are becoming more experiential, with some tea rooms across the region inviting diners to immerse into unique thematic settings while satisfying their sweet tooth cravings. These establishments offer afternoon tea experiences that evoke themes such as delightful summer afternoons, spooky Halloween celebrations, and even space travel via cleverly crafted pastry treats and other tea accessories.
Conrad Osaka's Spook-tacular Leopard sweets
At the Conrad Osaka’s Atmos Dining, for example, afternoon teas until end of this month are made up of “Spook-tacular Leopard Sweets” in collaboration up-and-coming fashion designer Teruaki Takahashi. This sophisticated and stylish themed tea incorporates both elements Halloween and the leopard print, a current fashion trend. To go along with their drink, diners are invited to sink their teeth into Halloween versions of the restaurant’s famed Red Velvet Cake, and new culinary innovations from Jimmy Boulay, the hotel’s executive pastry chef.
Hilton Tokyo's Alice in Rose Labyrinth
On the other hand, a Halloween and Alice in Wonderland theme are being experienced at the Marble Lounge at the Hilton Tokyo as it rolls out a specially created “Alice in Rose Labyrinth” afternoon tea until 6th of November. Featuring a Halloween-inspired twist to the popular children’s story, diners can munch into treats like the White Rose Trap, a brioche bun topped with bechamel sauce and cheese, or the Mad Hatter’s Dark Labyrinth, made from 64% dark chocolate.
Waldorf Astoria Beijing's Into Deep Space
Meanwhile, the Peacock Alley in Waldorf Astoria Beijing is luring afternoon tea enthusiasts “Into Deep Space” until 22nd of November. Designed in collaboration with Seletti, an Italian creative company, the hotel’s ‘spacey’ theme features interactive 3D projections on each table to display visions of the galaxy and innovative culinary delights like Crispy Fish Skin Crater with Black Garlic Puree and Caviar and Apollo 16 Wagyu Katsu sandwich on milk bread. Desserts like the Nebula Mini Doughnut and R3-D3 Milky Way Chocolate cake have also been thoughtfully decorated to resemble iconic elements of space.
Conrad Hangzhou's artfully designed tea stand
Over at the JIN Lobby Lounge at Conrad Hangzhou, no thematic attraction can possibly compete with its 360° panoramic view of the city enjoyed by diners as they sip their fragrant teas or nibble into sweet pastries from the restaurant’s “Modern Elements Afternoon Tea” spread. Inspired by the Qiantang River, an artfully designed tea stand bearing a colourful selection of amuse-bouche styled pastries mimics the river tide, accompanied by tea or champagne.
Conrad Bangkok's summer tea spread
Finally, the Diplomat Bar at Conrad Bangkok invites diners to a “Summer Sweet Afternoon Tea” respite after a day of heat and humidity in the streets of Bangkok. The experience comes with the relaxing scent of a Jo Malone London candle – which accompanies every tea set – as customers feast into a delightful selection of sandwiches, scones and cakes inspired by fresh summer fruits. Ashley T Coleman, director of Food & Beverage at Conrad Bangkok, told Tasty Asia: “Inspired by the summer sweet fruit – like pears and also beautiful florals, we love to create afternoon teas that emphasise and expand on exotic and unique items and ideas created by the team. Something that can help our guests explore and discover something new, an experience that is a journey.”
