Thailand’s Department of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Commerce has launched its "Think Rice, Think Thailand" campaign to create more awareness for Thai Rice by promoting its agricultural history, standards and quality to international markets.
The ministry said the “Think Rice, Think Thailand” campaign will also boost potentials of Thai rice exports. Information from this initiative will not only give traders more insights to buying and importing Thai rice, but will also acquaint them on rice varieties such as Thai Hom Mali, a popular fragrant rice variant, and other rice varieties that would suit the needs of consumers from importing countries.
Knowing the country’s standards on its rice varieties can also boost consumer confidence in the quality of Thai rice, the ministry added.
The country established its first Thai Rice Standards in 1957, when Thailand became a major global exporter of rice. Subsequent amendments included the Thai Rice Standards 1974, the Thai Rice Standards 1997, and the Thai Rice Standards 2016 which has set up Thai Hom Mali Rice Standards, Thai Fragrance Rice Standards, and Thai Rice standards. This year, the Thai Coloured Rice Standards were established. These standards now serve as benchmarks for the quality of Thai rice with definitions for both minimum composition and maximum limits.
